Pay Attention, Meditate.

As we prepare for our upcoming challenge, we invite you to join us for meditation classes in Hermosa Beach during the month of October as a way to complete your challenge and to refocus. If you're thinking meditation is not for you, you can't seem to focus, your mind won't quiet, we get it and so does Orlee Klempner, who will be leading a few of these. During her sessions she'll take you through some heart practices, giving space to cultivate joy, loving/kindness, compassion and equanimity. The non practice part of class will be a talk on defining the mind together, mindfulness, posture and more.

Meditating is paying attention on purpose and without judgement. Judgement of your thoughts and feelings. By paying attention your mind is anchored to a focus, a focus to keep you within the meditation and create a conscious choice. When we have forgotten the focus itself or begin creating stories in our head about what we have to do after this meditation session we simply notice. It is completely normal! My mind drifts about 75-90% of my meditation still. The mind is meant to produce thoughts. When we can simply notice, "ah! Thinking," and then walk the puppy mind back to the focus, that is without judgement. Not using judgement will quiet the mind even more. And when we do judge our experience, we notice that too. Basically, there is nothing wrong or right about this. It is only what it is. And that's the experience you are having. When we can trust in that and have a consistent practice, there is space for change, freedom. 


The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
